Like many potheads who choose a better route to their high, jumping ship from joints blunts and pipes to bongs or edibles or the newest form of use: dabbing concentrates!
Like on Pineapple Express when the lead role mentions smoking a bong cause it's healthier, Willie Nelson quit SMOKING but he didn't quit cannabis. The country singer is in his 80s and it's pretty hard to live that long without some sort of damage to your lungs, yet some are pointing to his smoking but he says he actually quit smoking but he hasn't quit cannabis. There are some people out there that are actually afraid of cannabis oil (Joe Rogan) and is almost exclusively into combusting cannabis. For a short lived period of time I was also a naysayer to cannabis oil: "it's like the crack of cannabis!" Said that once and only once, after smoking some chronic.
Which reminds me that chronic itself was at one point the crack of cannabis, or hash blocks, or oil in general! Since cannabis oil has been around since they realized you could take a solvent like alcohol or acetone and soak cannabis in it, strain it, than let it dry out.(similar to how you make instant coffee, drying out already made coffee)
I assume oil has been around since the alchemical boom, it's definitely been around in America since it's beginning, with dried extracts on the market.
I'm not sure if Willie is eating his cannabis or vaping it, maybe he's using oil or maybe he's not even getting high and just using hemp, which is now legal all over the USA.
Now back to one of my statements above, cannabis oil dabbing being new?
Dabbing probably came slowly because of the advancement in paraphernalia. Personally I believe it all started with opium pipes in China, the basic concept of vaporizing with a handheld device goes back hundreds of years!
The opium pipe concept was adopted by other drug users and turned into crack pipes with the bulb on the end and of course the DAB RIG. But before the DAB RIG how did we vape oil? (Other than specialized devices like the volcano, but these techniques are much older)
One such technique is the DAB on a needle! The more solid hashes could be placed on a needle, heated while breathing in or filling a cup with smoke before inhaling.
Another is the crack spoon! Put hash on a spoon and heat up!
A 3rd technique that is well known is HOT KNIVES. Hot knives can be used for a variety of products including solid hash, hash oil, or flower! You heat the knives on a stove, not usually red hot, than you sandwich a bit of product between the 2 hot knives. Hot knives can indeed result in combustion if it's too hot so be careful with the flower option! Becareful in general with hot knives for obvious reasons, one thing I heard years ago was someone using hot knives than passing out on the stovetop. In my mind it has to be a myth but does help us remember how dangerous cooking can be! :P
